Peregrine Falcon returns to the Mission…
October 27, 2008I had walked past this church on the way home and forgot to check the steeple. It was not until I was on my steps, that I remembered to look and spotted a familiar shape. The church is at 22nd and Capp Street in the Mission District. And this is the second time I had seen a falcon here this fall season.
So walking back, I was able to get some good closeups, no legs were exposed, so I don’t know if this bird has been banded. I’ll be keeping watch on the location in the hopes of more viewings…
You can see all the shots at this link.

that is “cappy” the peregrine, a long time capp street resident. especially this time of year, you’ll notices a lot of dismembered pigeon parts on the sidewalk next to that church… before I was introduced to Cappy, I used to wonder what they were up to in there…
I’ve stopped calling the bird Cappy, mostly because I can’t say for sure that it is the same peregrine we see each time. I’ve first photographed one on that steeple in the year 2000, but I only started a regular watch in 2005. The bird from yesterday was on the steeple again today when I went to work and also this evening when I came home. You can see the latest shots of the falcon at this link:

And of course all the shots of Cappy from 2005, 2006 and 2007 and 2008 springtime are available as well in the select images link and previous diary pages on my main page:

Regards to all and keep checking in on the birds.
Best wishes,

I used to work in the bank building on 22d/Mission, and our 7th floor offices looked north toward downtown. We all pitched in and bought a pair of communal binoculars so that we could watch this falcon as he stalked pigeons all around the area. Another fave perch of his is the huge Skechers sign on 22d/Mission, kitty corner to the Wells Fargo. We actually saw him grab a pigeon mid-flight once — AWESOME. He is a killing machine.
Hi Glen,
I saw a peregrine on the church at 22nd and Capp this morning. Very exciting. I hope it’s the same bird in your photos from last year.
I snapped a shot of a peregrine at 6th and Market yesterday. http://twitpic.com/nctrw Do you know if this is Diamond Lil or Dapper Dan? Thanks!
Hi Sean,
I checked out your shot of the raptor. I think it looks like a red-tailed hawk. I’ve seen them in that area several times over the past few months.
Regarding the falcon at 22nd and Capp. It could be the same bird as last year, but I have not got any new shots of it yet for comparison. I’ll post something on my blog when I do capture it on camera.
